Project Haskell Update
Last spring our three downtown churches, coordinated by Jeremiah Development, had agreed to step up our efforts to help the students at Haskell Year Round Academy. A dozen Emmanuel parishioners volunteered to help with math and reading skills in the classrooms.
Those of you who would like to continue, please call the office at Haskell, 815-966-3355. Additional volunteers are always welcome. Call Haskell and they will send you the necessary forms for you to complete. Thank you to all of you who sponsored the 22 soccer team members this summer! We’ll try to get an update on their success on the field.
Last year the school held Zumba classes on Tuesday evenings, for a cost of $50 per week or $2000 for the year. These popular classes brought in an average of 30 students and their parents, plus some Haskell neighbors. Unfortunately their grant ended, and Haskell is asking us to help underwrite the cost of the classes this year. If you would like to contribute, please get a check to Emmanuel with the notation “Haskell Zumba class”.
Another option is helping to sponsor a class field trip to places such as Lockwood Park, Klehm, the Discovery Center or Burpee Museum. Please contact Principal Loree Leathers at Haskell, 815-968-8304, if you would like to help out. Some trips only require the cost of the bus trip, around $100. The best part... you get to go along with the class!
Classes started July 23 at Haskell, but it is not too late to volunteer. Please consider helping. For more information please call Jean Frana, 815-968-8304. Ask any of the volunteers…the rewards are incredible!
Artwork from Haskell students will be on display at Pastor Andria’s Installation reception September 10. These talented students are under the direction of art instructor Katrina Olson.
